Earlier this year, I was contacted by an old friend who had co-written a screenplay for an M. Night Shyamalan film starring Gary Busey as a brilliant but down on his luck Nascar driver who had taken to selling acid to college kids and performing pro bono back-alley abortions. It was going to be called "Free Abortions, $5 LSD". Or something like that; I don't know much about cinema. Anyhow, they wanted some country songs for the soundtrack and my friend encouraged me to submit some material. I had no material, so one dark and stormy night I set up a microphone, plugged it into my ancient and wheezing computer, and recorded nine songs that I thought were pretty good. I sent in the songs but never heard back. I don't know why.
I'm not saying these are the best performances I've ever given of these songs, but there was something kind of special and magic about that night. I played them different than usual, somehow, because of that feeling. At the end of one song you can hear hail rattling against the roof and windowpanes of 1&1/2 Chevalier. It was that kind of night.
